The Old Newcastle House is a proud Community supporter, regularly taking part in the Village of Newcastle Events, and donating wherever possible to local fundraising initiatives. We’re always happy to give back to the community that supports us, wherever possible!

Recently, we’ve been working with the new Durham Region Hospice volunteers to fundraise for this very valuable community resource. In 2019, we were pleased to participate in fundraising events that brought in $2000 for the new Hospice!

Some of our recent community involvement has benefitted the following local organizations:

  • Clarington Hospice – The Durham Region Hospice Project
  • The Clarington East Food Bank
  • Newcastle Lions Club
  • Newcastle Horticultural Society
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarington
  • The Newcastle BIA: Newcastle Santa Parade, Canada Day and Seasonal Events
  • Newcastle Colts Soccer Club
  • Newcastle Public School
  • St. Francis of Assisi School
  • Clarke High School

THE NEWCASTLE TOWN HALL CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCH 2023

On Christmas Day in 2023, we had a great turnout to our Community Christmas Lunch at the Newcastle Community Town Hall. All were welcome to join us that day for a great hearty breakfast or lunch, as not everyone has a dinner to go to, or enough means to put food on the table on this special day. We were pleased to see so many join us and enjoy a traditional Christmas gathering, and our local business owners once again stepped up to organize, cook and participate to make it all a great event. You’ll see some familiar community supporters here, residents and business owners, and everyone with a smile and able to donate some time to help out, even if it’s washing dishes or preparing tables, serving food or sweeping the floor, everyone gives back a bit of time and energy to participate.

It really does, Take a Village.

SUPPORTING THE NEWCASTLE SANTA CLAUS PARADE

It takes an incredible amount of time, volunteers, and also donations to keep the Newcastle Santa Claus Parade going each year, and this is a great challenge for the members of the Newcastle Parade Committee to put together for us to enjoy. The planning actually begins as soon as the calendar changes to the following year, when the committee meets to start planning the next one! Funds raised are essential to pay for the bands and special appearance floats to attend, and a small army of people gather on parade day to help it all run so smoothly, from the fireworks, to traffic flow, lining up the floats, organizing the student volunteers, and organizing absolutely everything one can think of. Many local Clarington businesses, large and small, from Corporations to Mom and Pop shops, to generous individuals contribute each year, even when times are as difficult as they have been, and it’s so great to have a nice Thank You sent to us from Parade Chair, Karen Bastas, a longtime Newcastle resident and former owner of The New Massey House Restaurant. We look forward to participating again in 2024. Well done to all who work so tirelessly to bring it all together for our residents and from nearby towns in the region.

DONATION TO THE CLARINGTON EAST FOOD BANK, A FUNDRAISER RESULT!

It takes a Village to come together and raise funds for our community, and our patrons did just that as we were able to raise $1500 from the sale of our 100th Newcastle Hall Anniversary Beer this month! Thanks to all who bought the new brew! The Christmas Hamper Program at Clarington East Food Bank will have a great boost, right when the holidays are just around the corner! Thank you to Orono Weekly Times for the article and coming out to support our fundraiser!

Once in a lifetime’ beer series celebrates Newcastle Community Hall
Historic hall turns 100 this year
By Moya Dillon Clarington This Week

There’s something special brewing for the 100th anniversary of the Newcastle Community Hall.

Kevin Adams, owner of the Old Newcastle House Taps and Grill, is behind a limited edition beer celebrating the historic hall.

“This is a once in a lifetime event, we’re not going to be around to see the hall turn 200, so I really wanted to do something to honour that legacy,” Adams said. “It’s just celebrating the community.”

Adams partnered with Oshawa’s Lightcaster Brewery to create originally designed labels for a limited edition, hand-numbered, 1,000-can run of their popular Kolsch beer. The cans are available exclusively at the Old Newcastle House and all proceeds will benefit Clarington East Food Bank.

“It’s kind of a neat thing, some people opt to drink them, some don’t, but it’s something you can put on a shelf in your garage or bar or wherever just to mark the occasion,” said Adams. “It’s my way of giving back to the community that’s supported me for the last 14 years.”

A celebration was held on July 29 to mark the 100th anniversary of the hall, which was bequeathed to the municipality by Chester Daniel Massey in 1923 for use by the community.
